The story of the Magi can help us prepare for Christmas.
First, the Magi seek. They were searching. They were observing the stars. They were looking for something. They were seeking.
Second, the Magi go. They dared to leave their comfort zones and follow the star. The Magi, amidst their fears, carried on in courage.
Third, the Magi give. They gave gifts to Jesus. How often do we seek to receive from Jesus but forget to give to Jesus? The Magi gave treasures to Jesus. It is in giving to Jesus that the Magi receive - and what the Magi receive is a heart that is changed, transformed, set on fire, and capable of greater love.
Fourth, the Magi are open to a different way of life. Matthew tells us that the Magi traveled a different way back to avoid Herod. The grand takeaway is that the Magi travel differently after encountering Jesus. This different way of travel symbolizes how the Magi were open to being changed on the inside.
It is to seek, to go, to give, and to be open to a different way of life that is the best way to prepare for Christmas.
